I know what the dictionary says. There are positive and negative connotations to that word.

The negative is so that you will be "bigger and better" than the others around you. From reading John's posts and meeting with him, I see no evidence of that.

The positive is meeting a goal. Whether it is climbing a mountain, riding a "bad horse". or making a living farming, it does feel good to succeed. I know I feel good when I succeed.

Actually, I feel good when I take a challenge, even if it does not come out the way I want. To me, the thing worse than failure is not trying. Of course, this can be taken to a ridiculous extreme, but I think you get my point.
