Have always had the upmost respect for guys that farm less than a 1000 acres and make it work. Always figured they were better managers than those that needed to farm half the country.

I have got a neighbor that has about 700 acres of crops runs some cows and feeds out the calves. Has no off farm income and his wife doesn't work off the farm. One of the best money managers I know and his bottom line would probably put to shame, those that farm several times what he does.
