Thank you Hay Wilson! I always enjoy your comments. One thing I especially failed to mention is the following fact associated with economies of size. That is, the variation in profitability across farms in a given size class typically is much greater than the variation in average farms' profitability across size classes. Said another way, the typical farm in the top third (profit-wise) of small farms generally is more profitable than the average large farm, etc. So, no one should ever use farm size as an excuse to not be profitable. Moreover, you bring up the point that the more one moves to niche-type operations, the more important it is to make comparisons across size measures other than acres, for example, total revenue. As always, there are many ways to "skin the cat" when it comes to generating profit in farming. That's the beauty of our capitalistic U.S. system.
