Sunnyside, WA | I am a young (36) dairy farmer and I pay my bills. I always try to be an advocate for the industry and our own farm.
The negativity from dairy farming mainly comes from the increased input costs and risks associated with being in animal agriculture today. Used to be that if you took the time to put feed through and animal, you were generally rewarded financially for doing so. Increased feed prices has made that a lot more risky the last few years. Buying feed makes that even worse.
There is always a future in any business, you just have to be creative on how you start and be aware of the large swings in profitability in all sectors of ag. Crop farming has been great the last few years, but the tide will also turn. Always does. Most dairymen remember how bad 2009 was and that will always be fresh in our minds. | |
