Subject: RE: Negativity towards dairy farming?

Shelby- I have been working in the dairy industry for about 20 years. I started out milking cows on a 75 cow dairy, now I work in nutrition. I have worked with dairy farmers who are so down on the industry that I wonder how they can get out of bed in the morning. But for every one of those guys I worked with 10 who were positive about the industry and loved what they did for a living.

Don't let what you are reading here get you down. The internet is a great place to vent (and exaggerate) due to the relatively anonomous nature of message boards. My suggestion for you would be to contact an extension Dairy Specialist in your state and ask for referrals to positive, progressive dairy producers (size doesn't matter) that would talk to you about what they like about their business and what motivates them.

My husband is a herdsman and he loves what he does. The guy he works for is very positive as well. And I consider myself blessed and lucky to work in this industry. I can't see myself doing anything that doesn't involve dairy cows.

Good luck with your future in the dairy industry!
