My friends say the boss would be understanding, but I'm not sure that it will be to the degree I'm accustomed to. Likely a few "emergencies" a year would be acceptable. Currently if I need to meet the vet or unload a seed delivery or whatever, within reason, I can just go and make up my hours later.

My advice on that: don't feel bad about taking the time you need, and don't hold back on taking the time. Let them say something about it if you are taking too much time. Looking back, I've made way too many farm and personal sacrifices to be the good employee that's always there. Reasonable employers will look past a lot of "emergencies" as long as you are good otherwise and the work gets done.

I'm in my 30s and am very fortunate in that I was able to stop my in town engineering job and come to the farm full time. I still do some side contract work here and there if it works with my schedule, especially in the winter months.
