Maybe we can say the 30's had less complications????

Just can speak for here from what I was told. Hired man got $1 day for 10 hrs. Farm was self sufficient , milk,beef, eggs,chicken,pork and grew all there own vegetables,had a small orchard.
Well & windmill, no running water or electric. An outhouse & maybe a crank phone.
Winter meals were canned meats, fruits, tomatoes, pickles,ect. along with wild game/fish.
Heat was firewood & some coal.
No fat people, but farmers were most fortunate to at least have food
