| This isnt talked about much, but not having federal crop insurance had a lot to do with the farms tha failed in the 80's around here. 1980-85 were drought years 3 out of those 5 years around here. I remember cutting beans that made 3 bu per acre more than once.
The only way we survived was running old wore out equipment, and patching it together with parts from salvage yards. My dad and grandad didnt go crazy in the 70's so we didnt have a lot of debt fortunatly.
What finally turned it around was 1988, when they had a drought in the main corn belt, so prices went up and we had a decent crop. I think fed crop insurance started about then too.
Good thing, it hasnt rained here in 5 weeks. corn wanted to pollinate this week. Looks like well be using crop insurance again this year. | |
