Subject: RE: Farmers about how hard they work

Western Oregon
I left home at 12, planted my first crop of wheat at 13. I ran hard the first 10 years. My health suffered. Got to where I owned everything, so cut back from 1600 to 800 acres, all right close to home. Kept 1 hired man/mechanic'ed in the winter. Sold off the big stuff, kept 3-4240's and older smaller equipment for 6 more years. I had never had a production loan. Built as I went. Downsized again, the last 4 years I farmed alone, kinda like 1/2 time. Got real sick in '92 and had to stop farming. All I ever wanted to do was farm, thought it would be small time, maybe 400 acres but once it took off, I went with it. Knowing what I know now, wish I had stayed at 800 acres and enjoyed it more....James
