Subject: RE: Farmers about how hard they work

A lot of farmers work hard, but as you said, they also take the flexibility they have for granted. Plus in the non-busy seasons a lot of household tasks like mowing the lawn or washing the car or painting the house get done on what would be company time at a town job. But since it is seen as part of taking care of the farm, it gets counted as working hours. A lot of farmers lack perspective on this and don't understand that Joe Sixpack has to do all of those things after 5:00 and on the weekends, so they really don't have as much downtime as it appears, either.

A friend who worked in town for many years before he farmed said he would rather do hog chores on Saturday morning and be able to run to the mall for Christmas shopping on Tuesday afternoon than having to do the opposite, like he used to. The freedom of setting your own schedule and doing things when it's convenient instead of when your boss allow you to is a huge benefit.
