Wisconsin | I'll say it for the third time, if the old alternator worked with just the battery wire hooked up, then it was a one wire alternator, and this is not.
Next step would be finding where the original voltage regulator was, or maybe still is. That will have a wire going to it that is switched with the ignition switch and is meant to excite the alternator, extend that to the excite terminal and you're done. Turn the ignition on, but don't start the engine, and check for voltage at any loose wires in the area of the alternator, or the original voltage regulator, then turn the truck off and confirm the wire goes off. Leave the other hooked to the battery terminal if it needs that to charge, or remove it if it works without it.
