You may want to double check about an external regulator. We had one go bad on an l9000 and I stole it off a junk l8000 we had. It was a metal box approximately 3 inches square and 3/4 inch thick mounted in the engine compartment right in front of the passengers seat


It's on a Ford so I would guess it had an external when new but someone switched to a self exciting Delco

external Ford, feeding an internal Delco, won't make a steady voltage output !!!
