It’s the left terminal (#1) that must be switched to avoid killing the battery. Right terminal (#2) stays hooked up to power all the time without causing problems.
It’s possible it will self excite from now on without either wire connected. Or it won't and you’ll have to figure out a switched source for #1 to excite it every time you start it up.
