| Anti-lock brakes are not designed to stop the vehicle faster in any driving conditions. They are designed to allow you to maintain steering control while braking in less-than-ideal conditions. They do this by preventing a skid and allowing you to steer the vehicle.
If this makes you stop quicker, it is incidental. The car will stop in the best distance possible for the weather conditions, abs or not. It just takes driver skill slightly out of the equation.
In the OP situation. the ABS should have functioned as above and given the speed, distance and conditions. It is likely that there was sufficient ability to achieve a controlled stop.
