Does it really provide that much incentive? If crop insurance doesn’t provide a profit just a backstop as many say, there has to be a strong incentive for profit beyond that otherwise a small loss isn’t any different than a large loss. Also the economics are much different away from the high APH/low insurance cost areas. High insurance levels are cost prohibitive. So once again one is only insuring for the worst case scenario and in that case is overall production changed. It feels like those who seldom experience losses somehow think crop insurance is this cash cow on the fringes.

Also what about the disincentives crop insurance also provides when it comes to total production? Prevent plant, crop failing, no control by insurance over agronomic decisions once one feels they are in claim territory? Not to mention all of the acreage in CRP. Quick way to really make cheap grain is an extra 5 million planted acres of corn and beans.

What would you do differently on your farm if no government payments?
