| I think everyone has pretty much summed it up already, but here is what works for us with no-till corn in Kentucky.
1. Spread residue at harvest
2. Plant cover crops to hold the ground over winter.
3. Use floating residue managers to part the residue and lightly scratch the soil (to warm soil and to help create a little loose soil to close the seed slot).
4. Place a band of N+P alongside the row with a fertilizer opener, ideally 1" below the seed, so if it doesn't rain the roots access the fertilizer. (this year for example, it hasn't rained for 3+ weeks and any no-till corn with surface dribbled N doesn't look good, compared to 2x2 systems).
5. Use a good closing system to close the slot to help stop slugs using the seed slot as a highway.
The image below shows the difference between WITH 2x2 fertilizer and WITHOUT 2x2 fertilizer (on a point row where the fertilizer got turned off). It's important here for no-till corn.
