| Here this has been a big problem this year. I think half of it is the fact we had a very dry fall and winter so almost zero residue decomposition occurred. Next we had very pervasive cold temperatures during most of April and May. Just a week ago we were having temps in the low 40's every night. The corn is going to be stunted when the soybean residue from last year is 1.5 inches thick over the row. However, that does not mean the corn will yield less in those areas as it will be excellent mulch later on.
The changes I am thinking of for the future are
1. spread the residue better behind the combine
2. adding residue cleaners to the planter
3 planting later
4 apply a product in the fall to help decompose the residue
5 use some type of tillage or a harrow to move or bury the residue.
We already band 40N and 15S on the surface over the row.
I this is a challenge most no-tillers face and it is worse some years than others
