Subject: Re: Hydraulic Drives to control Planter sections

I do not have any experience with any hydraulically driven planters. Our current planter is a 16 row 1770 that is ground driven. I am in the process of developing a budget for buying a used 1770 24 row and adding auto-row shutoffs (although I don't feel shutting every row off individually is necessary) among other things. My goal in this discussion is to see if I can save some money by doing it hydraulically rather than with air or electric like what is more commonly done. I am honestly not 100% certain that I like the idea of having a hydraulically driven planter in the first place. We never have to worry about slippage of drive wheels in the conditions we plant in and we have shields that are sufficient for preventing stalks from ripping chains off. Our stands are good so the only reason I would be interested in the extra complexity of a hydraulically driven planter would be for saving money on setting up an automatic row shutoff system and for giving us the ability to prime the seed meters without going out with a crescent wrench and turning the 7/8" shafts.

Since it doesn't appear that you use your system for automatic row shutoffs, I'm curious as to what your motivation is for running a single motor for every row? My guess is that you feel decreasing the number of chains increases your probability of having even spacing. If so I believe you are probably justified with that reasoning because you plant primarily higher population crops. With most of our stuff being done in the 16500 range, I believe perfect spacing (although our spacing is good) is not as important as eliminating doubles.
