SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ
I doubt winter grazing of corn would work HERE out in the plains were the average wind speed is 17 MPH on a daily basis. Any corn left in the field here would be covered by constant drifting of snow. Snow doesn't fall straight down here it comes horizontal with help from the wind. Jim has a protected area unlike our flatland no trees area. He is also doing it on a small scale, unlike the large finishing operations we have around here. You need protected feedlots from the wind and cold here.
Besides most are feeding DDGS or silage as part of the ration to lower feed costs vs straight corn.
I know one thing...... leaving 200 bu corn at $7 a bu out in the field all winter HERE would not be good for the pocket book.
