NC
I have to admit I am not optimistic
We have farmed/cattle for our whole living

In the past I kept thinking if we can get past x,y,z, that is draining our profit we will be alright
We get past x,y,z, and something else comes along to drain the profit.
Over and over and over

As we are getting older I see no way to get over our biggest drain-- health care and health insurance.

Spreading fixed costs out is the only way to make it work- and that leads to bigger and bigger operations or hobby and part time operations.
Niche markets are a wonderful thing- but so far I haven't found one that will support the farm and family.

The truth is that people are not paying enough for their food - till they do the only answer is Walmart style production. I think that grain prices are where they should be, I think beef, hog and chicken prices should be twice as high as they are. Talk about gnashing of teeth and food riots in the streets :)
