Conger, MN | I agree with the learning to take a check at a younger age part.
I coached for 12 years, and the spectrum of "illegal check" calls between different refs is huge. A fair number of calls are just players bumping into each other or jostelling for the puck, and the one that is more solid on his (or her) skates gets penalized for not falling down. I found this to be even more pronounced in girls hockey.
There is lots of grey area to start with, and then you ad in inexperienced and young refs . . . and there is prone to be tons of variance. | |
