| I decided early on that I wanted to be a farmer so I took the advice of my grandfather who was a lifetime farmer. He told me that I should go to college (he only made it to 8th grade) and study a discipline within agriculture. He also thought it might be helpful to learn a trade and get some work experience off of the farm. He thought trade skills were not only important in farming, but in general would always be skills that are in demand. Since he never made it to college, his advice was based on observing his own children and how they succeeded utilizing skills that they learned from college. I think I will underscore what others have said about college. It's not necessarily about the degree, but the overall experience and associated discipline.
That mentioned, I do know some very smart and successful people that never went to college. I also know some really dumb people that went to college. lol.
