Just had another thought when I woke up this morning.... I would encourage you to take a hard look at the skills and talents your son has. I think there would be value in requiring your son to advance his skills as part of a condition for him to come back to the farm, either as an employee or a partner. For example, if he is good at working with a welder, require him to get certified in a welder's school; etc, etc. I'm not sure how specific to get here, but I think you can get the idea. The other thing that I think would be immensely valuable would be a background in business management - specifically ag business management. If he wants to farm in the future, I think a background in business management would be "required". Not saying a 4-year degree. however, "any" is better than "none". You will have to look at your son's abilities and talents to determine how hard to push on this area. |
