I do not care about the step son. I see that he has little to do with this conversation, other than you are comparing your children--but I won't get into that.

Listen to what has 'worked'. Realize that farming is a business. A technical trade is good. A training in some science, economics etc I would argue is better.

Look at this board. 99% of our lives revolve around farming like your son. Just fact. Your son, mature is not, is a kid. Lots of growing to do yet. Fact.

I will tell you that if I had gone directly into the farm/harvesting after high school I would have lost it all by now. That is what I wanted to do. Dad said there was no room for me here without an education. After I resigned to that, college was the best experience I could have had.

And yes, I fit your description of your son perfectly. I tell you now, 10 years later, I would have lost my ass...
