sounds to me like your son should go on his own and let you and your "favorite" stepson  hash it out.  Maybe take you in when you get fed up with the stepson.
  Whatever he does it will probably turn out ok. He may want to stop and smell the roses on the way by though. Often times those with to much drive get run over by their own ambitions.
