I think from what I have seen on a video bred cow sale over the lunch hour the other day on cattleusa.com, bred cows and heifers prices are holding up and have been selling fairly well. I think there is some optimism and folks have plenty of hay on some northern areas.Some folks can also see beyond the regular dark-November-funk and see the basics of the cattle business in the US look fairly good with small herd and good demand for many types of beef.
As far as replacements, I am pretty well resigned to the fact I need to grow them the way I want them and am in the slow process of raising my own replacements. No one sells nor could I afford to buy the type of cows I want to end up with.
I did buy a few registered Hereford heifers, some bred, over the course of the past year to bring in some good outside genetics, but from here on it's mostly home grown. I will bring in a good registered bull every few years from Jerry Huth when necessary. jmho. Jim at Dawn
