The thing I am finding in my career (which is in a different field, marketing research), it helps to have mentors and friends in the business, to help negotiate the parts they don't tell you about in school or technical training, like being connected with people in the field who can help give you a leg up by knowing about open positions that aren't publicized, and also helping with other situations he might not want to ask his direct supervisor about (so he looks like he knows what he is doing, even though he is seeking outside advice). I too think it's a great thing your family is doing. Blessings to all of you for considering helping someone like this.
