Pittsburg, Kansas | My dad did it when I was about 30. He was around 65 or so (I was a Johnny come lately child).
I never farmed together with my dad other than helping him out as a teenager and trading labor for machine use for two or three years early in my farming career (started at 18 fresh out of high school).
He cut his farmed acres considerably (all owned ground) and rented half of it to me and half to my brother. Gave us both a real shot in the arm. A few years later fully retired and again gave the two of us the rest of his ground to farm. Gave us both a really solid base acreage on share rent.
He mostly did odd jobs with his chain saw and tractor till he got about 80 and couldn't do it any more. That and enjoyed the grand kids and helping out my brother and I when in a pinch for labor. Kept a few head of beef cows for a hobby.
Don't remember him regretting any of it.
