Subject: RE: Bad bull math on Working Ranch Radio

Western Ontario
Every area is different. My goal is to sell a 950lb yearling/grass yearling steer and 875-900lb heifers, for me they let us maximize our forage resources and the least dollars out of our pocket to do it. I’m the opposite of most cow calf producers, I’m fine with moderate weaning weight in the 550 steers/500 heifer range, I want the cow to be able to winter in the bush and also get rebred. I want the weaned calf to gain 2-2.5 on a forage diet, to your point, I get penalized for cattle gaining more than that because they get too fleshy for the guy that’s finishing them. On the class of cattle we sell it’s not uncommon to see a 30 cent spread 900lb x .30 =$270 Can ($200us), I use 120 calves off a bull to be conservative, so how much over $5000 can we afford to spend if they let us hit our targets, we also put a pretty big priority on if the bulls daughters will make cows, that’s where the real value can stack up.
