I agree, they have cattle today made for grain they do grow in a feedlot.
Angus cows are made for a feed wagon full of silage.
Out on grass raising a calf not so much.

From previous - - - - a 1450# cow and the calf is ONLY 680 some# at 205 days.
Cerap - - - Its not too hard to get that out of a moderately high maternal 1250# cow - - - and even then she's still only doing slightly better than 50% weaning.
There are cows out there that are capable of doing much closer to 2/3rds of body weight at 205 days but you better be calving her on grass - - - she is tougher on groceries!!!
(Their heifer calves aren't as good for making beef as their steers though - - - but I think I make more $$$$ on maternal genetics than on feedlot characteristics!!) |
