20 years ago it took a fall calf to hit 900lbs as a yearling on decent feed. Now we are hitting 900lbs at that June time frame and have to throttle back to hit markets.
These genetics will flat out grow if you give them the groceries to do it.
There's no arguing this. But you have to look at the value of gain on that 900 lbs and the extra groceries it took to get there. On one hand, that calf is more cost-effective to feed when it's gaining lean muscle at 3 llbs/day vs 2.25 lbs/day for the moderate framed animal, but you're also likely feeding its 1600 lb mother all year, which is an expense everyone further down the chain will gladly have you carry. |
