That said I ended up with a hopefully nice $5000 Hereford. If he sires 100 calves that would be an extra $15/calf bull cost over a $3500 bull. I think/hope the value added factor will easily offset that cost.
This is precisely the way to approach it in my opinion. Pay a third to a half more for a great bull instead of a good bull, but not double for an exceptional bull, unless you're looking to keep exceptional replacements.
The other thing to account for with the exceptional bull is that he's likely going to come up lame at the same rate as the good bull, which leaves it to the next exceptional bull to dig you out of an even deeper financial hole. |
