Up here you will feed cows stored feed for a good part of the year, not much grass grows from mid-Sept to mid-May, that being said yes it does cost money to make hay, but if you are the second owner on your equipment it does not cost nearly what the studies use for numbers. Every area comes with its handicaps, it is up to the producer to figure out what works. Yes up here you will either feed stored fed for basically 1/2 the year or have very few cows eating some very poor feed. One of our avantages is the bad fly season only lasts from mid June till maybe early Sept. , last summer some one (I think) from Texas wrote in if he could not get his flies under control he was seriously considering getting rid of his cows-each area has its unique challenges and work arounds.
