North Central MN | Actually knowing what your costs are and what is eating up your cash flow. I worked with a "farm manager" for a number of years who kept me honest in where every dollar went. They also compared you to a peer group of similar type operators. It was indispensable to me to look at areas to trim the fat. Controlling what I can control which is shopping for the yearly big ticket items like fuel, fertilizer, protein, meds, and wear/tear parts. I have no loyalties for things I know I need and can find them elsewhere for less.
Marketing was a very poor performing area for me so finding someone to help me learn the tools available paid more than any other "consulting" person ever. I'm in the converting corn to cash business not feeding livestock. Everybody looks at this part different.
