I completely agree with the blowback effect in light crops. Regarding the extra wear, recutting of crops significantly increases the horsepower requirement of the unit, University research has shown this as well as manufacturer testing. Not to mention with every revolution of the disc, you are inducing contact stresses into the material so the more RPMs the more material stress and higher wear.
