Subject: Re: Sickle bar or rotary

Leesburg, Ohio
We run an NH1431 discbine, and love it, would never go back to a sickle.
I would agree with most of what's been said, except for maybe a couple items.
It does take alot of power to run a rotary, depending on how fast you're running, and it's not all, or even very much, from the hydraulic load. We pull ours mostly with an 8300 Deere set at about 250 hp. In long, smooth fields with autosteer, we can run up to 13 mph, and that kind of speed will make the smoke roll on 250 hp, and it's all pto driven, no hydraulics other than lift and swing.
Also, I have never been able to pick up down crop with a sickle, not even close. A disc mower won't get it all if it's down bad, but it will suck up alot of it, and it won't plug. A sickle won't get any of it unless you run against the way it leans, and then the sickle will plug, no matter what. Anybody who says they never plug a sickle in down crops haven't had a decent crop go down. Been cutting hay since I was 10, so I have a little experience in that regard.

Buy the disc, it's a no brainer.
