Subject: RE: Thoughts on 3rd year corn

Virginia
We just finished a field of 4th year continuous corn. Part of it was Pioneer 33M54 and the rest of it was DKC 61-66. Checked the 61-66 yesterday with a weigh wagon and the yield was 204, test weight 60 lbs and moisture 16.5. Yield on the M54 was comparable. Yetter residue managers, combination of one cast iron closing wheel and one spading wheel, notill coulters--JD 7000 conservation planter.

The soil is a fine sandy loam Fertilizer is poultry litter and usually 70-90 lbs sidedress N dribbled on with no incorporation. Corn was planted on April 23. Rainfall: April 1.65", May 2.85", June 3.70", July .75", August 4.95" (Half of August rainfall was in the third week)

We do absolutely nothing to handle residue with the exception of row cleaners. It somehow just seems to decompose. I'm sure our climate here makes a big difference. I only see yield increases with notill.
