Thumb of Michigan | Starting over here very soon. Biggest problems I've always seen with aerial seeding is lack of preparedness by the farmer. In this area, flying wheat on was a last ditch deal when it looked like conventional methods weren't going to work. Too much leaf drop, very poor stands. In Sanilac Co in particular, it seems like guys have been more willing to commit early enough to make it work. If you have yellowing leafs, its time to get to the airport with seed right now. Once leaf drop starts, its pretty dicey.
Each pilot has different ways of pricing, but local guy here is less than what I can rent a drill, pay a driver, and supply a tractor for. And, as the previous duster used to say "If I leave tracks, the jobs free". Plus the job's done in a timely manner. Wheat was getting drilled here last year into November. | |
