My prefered method would be to burn the stalks. At quarter inch depth planting, penetration can be a problem. Sharp blades are a MUST.

Let me know what you find out on a drill with row cleaners.........that would be the ticket. If you can "trench" slightly with the row cleaners, you can put the crown below ground level.
