One of the dangers of shredding stalks is that you could end up with hairpinning - where the drill cannot cut thru the stalks.

While you are experimenting, maybe you want to let a section where you do not shred stalks - just drill right thru them - and see if you have a better or worse stand ... or no different.

Just a thought.
