You mention you are turing cattle out ot grass in may, why not just move your calving back a little bit, and calve in may out on grass. I have been calving in late april early may out on dormant warm season grass pasture for the last few years, and have had zero issues. My cattle are never really in small lots, so they get plenty of excerise. This would allow you to wean earlier than feb or march, and you might be able to utilize some poorer forage for your cows since they will not be supporting a calf yet. With 500 hd of cows, its tough to baby sit them all the time during calving. I have no where near that many and i usually check mine in the morning and before dark. Calving when the weather is nicer, and out on grass, makes things pretty easy if you have the right cattle.
