Subject: Is RTK really necessary?

South-central Nebraska
Other than strip till applications or even planting on vegetable/crop beds, is RTK necessary? I had the next less accurate guidance, JD SF2 +/- 2-4 inches, followed by the RTK last year. Because our JD dealer network made it less costly, many guys have joined the cooperative use of RTK towers through our JD dealership. I can't say that I saw a whole lot of difference planting with autotrac or on our yield maps.
In our area Deere haver had an RTK network and CaseIH dealers quickly started as well. So, lots of guys are going to the RTK because it is more reasonable this way. But, our Cat dealer has not gone to a network yet, therefore requiring portable base stations at a higher cost on an individual basis. If we decide to strip till anything, I probably will want RTK, haven't done that yet.
