Subject: RE: water run off in no till

Thumb of Michigan
I have a neighbor who's been really agressive at adopting no-till over the years. Bought the first 750 drill in the neighborhood for example. Very dedicated to the system- BUT- he has a couple of fields on some pretty severe (for this area) slopes that he has water erosion problems on. He's tried a number of different things that have helped, but hasn't got a fool proof method yet. We have one farm that requires us to work the ruts in on every couple of years. We try to have something continuously growing in the bad areas especially, but it can still be a problem. The smooth surface from no-tilling does nothing to slow water down like some other tillage type things might. Just between us girls, it probably should never have anything but corn or wheat planted on that particular field. With that said, we are still by far ahead by no-tilling it vs anything else.
