East Prairie, MO | I have an 80 that my grandpa started as a continuous no-till experiment in about 96. He was an early adopter of no-till in the early 80's but being continuous and still planting wheat behind the corn crop was a problem, 750 drill cured that. He retired in 99 and insisted I keep it going because he wanted to see if the stories of it "coming around" were true. There was a yield drag at first but I can say for sure around year 8 or 9 it really started showing off a little. It is irrigated sand and you can nearly throw a soil probe down and it will go to the handle now! Yields are consistantly in the top of all my field averages, just wish all of my ground was suited to this practice. I have more that does fit the bill and am starting to convert them slowly to 100% no-till. It's tough to get going and stick with it but there is a reward to be had if you stay with it in the right situation. | |
