For plowboy, regarding is it ever realistic..... I do know some purchases are done for tax reasons, which sometimes seem partially logical, but the money has to be spent by a certain time and the choices available at the moment are limited.

Some people buy things or do things just because they can, not because you or I think it makes sense. Some purchases are made with an eye to being in position for a perceived future opportunity which then fails to materialize. Some operations are forced to sell assets when a distant materially uninvolved relative issues the equivalent of a cash call.

I suppose there are plenty of other available twists. but for the most part I agree with you that if a purchased asset is not likely to produce a return why buy it to begin with.
