Subject: I got a question for you Jim

south central IOWA
I get the impression you don't like pregnant cattle eating corn based on your one bad experience. But, the only experience you have is grazing corn where as I don't have any experience doing that. Now, in our operation, some cows may see corn and gluten, some may get silage all winter long. All leading right up to the day they calve and we have never had a problem like you describe.

I don't know if you have talked about it or someone has asked you but my question is. How many pounds of corn do you estimate your calves are eating per day? I'm sure you have an estimate of yield based on kernel count, I'm sure you have a good idea of the size of area you have fenced off, and I know you know how many days they are in there and how many pounds are in a bushel. So what is your educated guess. I understand you can't get an exact pounds per day figure.
