I had some trouble with calving when I had a couple bred heifers grazing corn a couple months for processing then I changed my mind and decided to let them calve.  A big mistake. Huge calves. I hate having to shoot my cattle.

Be careful with the corn gluten on bred heifers especially.

You knew they were bred and were letting them put all that feed into developing a calf that was never going to see daylight under your original plan? Sorry, but that's a waste of a lot of money. I'm a smaller herd size, too, so I can relate to having nowhere else to put a bull, and risking getting a heifer bred because of it, but that's what lutalyse is for.
