I think the bigger problem is the calf not developing properly or being born weak if the cows aren't fed enough, and you can definitely get them too fat. We only supplement the young cows that are skinny and some of the older ones, more to get them to rebreed than anything. 7-8month preg cows right now we are feeding a few lbs every other day of 30% cake with some good hay in those off days. Only trouble I have ever seen from over feeding cows in the late trimester is heifers being so fat they lay there and won't push the calf all the way out, think we had half a dozen that year you could walk up to and finish pulling it by hand. Stupid heifers acted like they were dying trying to push the calf out.
