Yes, tags come out. Buttons do not, at least not very easily. Yes they can be cut out but we are not talking about preventing crime here, just identifying a large number of animals in general cattle trade that today are just anonymous once they leave the farm (edit:in non-brand requirement states). I think RFID tags are a good idea. Branding is not "free" either and if you total up the true costs involved in a typical branding operation I bet they cost at least as much as an rfid button. jmho. I believe all Canadian cattle must have an RFID tag these days? In the Destron button/tag set I am experimenting with, the ID is really in the button. The tag in the set has the 840 number and name on it but could be lost and replaced with a standard number tag of any type and the animal would still have the electronic button. We are talking about ID here, not criminal activity. No tag, button or brand is going to prevent that. Here is a picture of the set I am using. The 840 series numbers (premises verified) have "unlawful to remove" on both the button and the eartag.
