i had to think a minute about what you were asking and realize you are being literal.
yes, i dont see why you couldnt make a good living off 80, good, paid for acres. should raise 18,000 bu of corn and farrow/finish 1200 niche marketed hogs, the hogs would have a $50/hd profit= $60,000 the corn raised on an <80 should net + $30,000 total $90,000/yr, plus you could fly on cover crops and background some 800 pounders over winter. should be enough dollar bills to go to hootie bars in your spare time :-)
What is going to be so special about your hogs that going to bring such a high price, until lately the hog market has been a blood bath. I raised hogs from the mid 70s until the blood bath of 2000 .18 cents a lbs for 250lb butcher hogs,$45 bucks a finished hog, the phone was ringing of the hook with people wanting to buy cheap hog…the phone was silent when the price was high…
1,200 head a year would be a lot of “niche” marketing, 23 head a week 52 weeks a year.
